The scenic byway plan is an action plan - we need to know what you think should get DONE along SR 109 to improve the travel experience, take of your resources and support communities.

Typical byway projects include:

  • Marketing and visitor communications (A web site for the byway? A new byway brochure?)
  • Museums, interpretive centers, and visitor information sites
  • Wayfinding and information signs (all the way from the intersection of Highway 8 with US 101 to Aberdeen & Hoquiam to the end of the road in Taholah)
  • Recreational sites like beach access, river access, viewpoints, interpretive sites, community parks...
  • Community gateway signs

What ideas do you have for the byway?

We need a walking, and hopefully bike, path from Pacific Beach Main Street to Seabrook entrance and beach access. We really need a pedestrian walkway addition to West side of the Joe Creek bridge. If we can accomplish this walkway across the bridge and a walking/bike path along 109 from Seabrook to the planned path between the Pacific Beach elementary school and the corner park, we would provide miles of walking and biking between three major scenic ocean accesses (Seabrook, Pacific Beach State Park, and Adelaide Gap), the Ocean Overview Gazebo at the end of Main Street, all the shops and restaurants on Pacific Beach Main Street, a weather protected bus stop, the Navy Base Resort, and the developing Seabrook area. This would be a major tourist attraction with excellent activities and very scenic views and ocean access. Main Street Pacific Beach is already wide enough for bikes and comfortable safe walking. From the Gazebo to Adelide Gap beach access is mostly already sidewalk. We just need to "bridge" the few thousand feet from Seabbrook entrance to the Coaner Park at the crossiing of Ocean Beach Road and 109. We have a fully developed Revitalization Plan for Main Street that gives us the guidance on how to develop the area from 109 to the Gazebo. This should be the one major project that brings people to Hwy 109 and provides a wide variety of Scenic Ocean views and access, shops, food, gas, walking, and biking, etc..

Developing a walking/bike trail along hwy 109 is needed because the local residents and tourists are using hwy 109 now to travel from Seabrook to Pacific Beach.
It is not a safe! It requires walking on the hwy but that does not stop the foot and bike traffic that go to shop and dine in Pacific Beach or access the scenic beach walking trails in Seabrook. Having a path that takes people out of their cars to enjoy the beauty of this scenic coast is a perfect project with a tremendous amount of community support.

How about public boat ramps for small craft (canoes/kayaks) on local waterways: Joe Creek, Moclips River, Copalis River, Grays Harbor, Humptulips River?

There is a former cliff top overlook south of the Roosevelt Beach Road that is blocked off by a berm - perhaps due to erosion. Can a safe overlook be recreated?

Can the Pacific Beach Resort be involved to promote interest in their history as a WWII naval base? A historical marker? Historic displays alongside the gift shop? Public access to the whale lookout tower?

Create a park and/or rest stop on the land opposite the Roosevelt Beach Road.

Create a park around the Analyde Gap Road to protect from further development and perhaps put a trail through the forest and overlook on the cliff top.

There are no playgrounds at any local parks. Find a design that would hold up to our weather.

Find a hill: Saddle Hill? Langley Hill? Put a park on top, cut the trees down, and open up a view towards the Olympics and/or the ocean.

More about playgrounds: look at Gyro Park in Victoria. It has giant concrete creatures for kids to clamber on.

I would like to see the speed limit lowered to 30mph on HWY 109 between just before Seabrook to Moclips. Even if you make a walking or bike trail, the road at 50mph (people drive faster) is not safe. With all the recent overturned vehicles and deaths on the highway, the speed needs to also be enforced. A slower speed also allows tourists to enjoy the scenery more.

The Moclips NPRY Depot Project is a very important key development to enhance this scenic byway. We are currently asking for letters of support to help facilitate a grant that we will be applying for in early 2009. Please visit the Museum of the North Beach website www.moclips.org to learn more about this wonderful project and to find out where to send your letter, as well as in-kind/matching grant pledges of support.

To start off with, my name is Steven Fry. I am in the sixth grade at Pacific Beach Elem. Here are my thoughts of a bike path to Seabrook. I think it would be really cool to have a bike path to Seabrook. A lot of people, including myself, love to bike to Seabrook. When people bike there though, you can feel the cars going by and i think that's very dangerous. Just think, if a car driver was not looking they could run right into you. That could get you severely injured or killed. That's why I think we should get a bike path to Seabrook.
Sincerely, Steven Fry

My name is Cari Linderman and I am in sixth grade at Pacific Beach Elementary. I think a bike path between Pacific Beach and Moclips so people will be safe. If you want to ride a bike you won't have to worry about getting hit by a car.

I am a sixth grade student at Pacific Beach Elementary. I think it would be nice to have a bicycle path because kids like to ride their bikes and it is not safe to ride their bikes on the road .If you wanted to go to Seabrook you would not have to be in a car you could just hop on your bike or just walk from here to there without wasting the money that you spend in gas.

My name is Skyler.I go to Pacific Beach Elementary.I am in 5th grade.I think it would be great to have a bike path because lots of people can get ran over from a car and get hurt. There's a lot of people that have to walk and ride bikes on the road to get places. There's lots of hikers that like to exercise .People that are handicapped can just ride on the path and people that want to go to the beach can just walk.

I am a 6th grader at Pacific Beach Elementary. I think it would be neat to have a bike path from Pacific Beach to Seabrook. A lot of people love to ride bikes, I really like to ride bikes. Many people like to challenge their selves to ride a bike path, than riding on the side of the road. It could also draw more people to Seabrook.

Hi,my name is Arleen Kramer.I am a sixth grade.r I go to Pacific Beach Elem. Some of my thoughts about the bike path to Seabrook. I think it would be a good idea because it would be nice to ride my bike to go see my friends that live in Seabrook. It can ,also help tourists come because a lot of people would like to ride bikes to P.B. Then it would help people so they don't have to waste money on gas. They would also get exercise. That's why it would be great to have a bike trail to Seabrook.

I am a 6th grade student at Pacific Beach Elem. I think that it would be fun for the kids that live here .They would be able to reach friends that live in Seabrook.Or relatives that live there. It would also be more safe for kids that already ride to Seabrook. If kids were riding on the rode they could get hit.

I am a 6th grade student at Pacific Beach Elem. I think it would be nice to have a bike path because I would ride my bike with my brother to Seabrook. It would be safer for kids and familys. People do like to run so it would be safer for them to run. People do like to take walks too. It will save money on gas. It might get people to come down here. People that live in Seabrook can get to Pacific Beach or people in Pacific Beach can walk to Seabrook.

I'd like to see all the brush cut on the west side of the guard rail at the view point just north of the Sand Piper on 109. If ALL the bushes were trimmed to the height of the guard rail, it would let people stay dry (if it might be rainy) and see one of the best views on the north beach. It would also keep people safe. so they don't try to balance on the guardrail to take pictures. (I saw 3 people doing that last summer.)

A petition movement is on it's way to make the North Beach aware of the need for a walking/biking pathway from Pacific Beach to Seabrook, and including Olympus Ocean Estates. Many signatures have already been collected, and grants being looked into for availability. Support the North Beach Pathway Project.

I am commenting on the proposed walkway/ bike path from Seabrook to Pacific Beach. I cringe at the thought of this path running right along the side of SR109. As a mother, I would not want my child (or family member) to walk next to a highway, let alone ride a bike there, unless some sort of concrete divider, or other safety wall, could be established. I already think it is just a matter of time before we have an accident on SR 109 at the specific sites of Seabrook’s trail to the beach. Whatever is decided, I hope that the safety of all comes first and foremost.

I live off of SR 109 on Valley Road in Grays Harbor City Hills and have numerous times encountered a motor home or large travling vehicle pull off in the turn lane and stop for traffic. This is very hazardous as I am preparing to turn with traffic behind me, and they are stopping. A sign needs to be placed indicating this is a turn lane only and not a slow traffic pull out. There is a slow traffic pull out approximately one half mile up the road.

It's a no-brainer for all the businesses from Seabrook to Pacific to heavily back a extremely safe, scenic walking and bike path that will connect the two towns. This would be a big plus for locals and especially the tourists would want to stay longer and spend money in both great little towns that have such a different flavor from one another.
